I have this same question. I donated to 2 charities last year during the Australian Wildfires. The charities are in Australia. Are they tax deductible for me? The link above is broken and I cannot see the answer.
It depends.. The IRS reminds donors that contributions to foreign organizations generally are not deductible. For more information see IRS Publication 526 (page 3).
Alternatively, the American Australian Association has established the tax deductible (for US citizens) Australian Bushfire Relief Fund, with 100% of the donations being directed to the Red Cross' Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund. The Association will issue an official receipt for your U.S. tax-deductible donation. For more information click here.
