You may have inadvertently entered something into TurboTax regarding disasters or damaged property or had a disaster or disaster distribution reported on a prior return that was carried over that is triggering you to answer the name question.

Affected taxpayers in a Presidential Disaster Area have the option of claiming disaster-related casualty losses on their federal income tax return. This will allow you to take the Casualty and Theft Deduction.

You can go through your TurboTax screens related to disasters to check your entries as follows:

Disasters are generally reported in the "Casualty Loss" section of TurboTax. To get to that section to review your answers, you can do as follows:

  1. Click on your search icon in the upper right corner of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type "casualty loss" in the search box
  3. Click on "Jump to casualty loss"

This will take you to the TurboTax screens that deal with disasters and Federally Declared Disasters to make sure you haven't erroneously answered one of them.

If the message said something about a "Qualified Disaster Distribution" then it is likely related to a Form 1099-R that you input. After inputting a Form 1099-R, you will be asked to answer the follow-up screens.  One question in the follow-up screens is "Was this a withdrawal due to a 2023 or 2024 Qualified Disaster?" You can check this screen to see if you accidently said "Yes' to the qualified disaster questions.

You can get back to your TurboTax screens that relate to Forms 1099-R as follows:

  1. Click on the Search Icon at the top right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type "1099-R" in the search box
  3. Click on the link that says "Jump to 1099-R"
  4. Click on your Form(s)1099-R
  5. And select "Edit"
  6. Then "Continue"
  7. Continue through the screens and you will get to the question "Was this a withdrawal due to a 2023 or 2024 Qualified Disaster"
  8. Answer "No"

You can also delete any Forms that may have been generated with respect to a disaster in TurboTax as follows:

In TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Click on "Forms" at the top right of your TurboTax screen to switch to "Forms Mode".
  2. In your left panel of your TurboTax screen under "Forms in my Return"
  3. Scroll down to "Form 8915-F" and click on it
  4. Select "Delete Form"
  5. A box will appear asking if you want to delete the form, Select "Yes
  6. If there is a Form 4684 delete that as well

In TurboTax Online:

  1. Continue your return
  2. In your left panel of your TurboTax Screen click on "Tax Tools"
  3. Click on "Tools"
  4. A "Tools Center" box will appear
  5. Scroll down to "Delete a Form"
  6. Next to "Form 8915-F" select "Delete"
  7. If there is a Form 4684, delete that as well
