Care before kindergarten qualifies for the credit, even if there is also an educational purpose.  However, the care must be provided so that you (and your spouse if married) can work, or look for work, or be a full time student.  Without the work component, pre-school is not eligible for a credit.

Yes, paying daycare for a church pre-school does qualify for the Child and Dependent Care Credit. The church daycare may be an Exempt organization if they did not provide you with an EIN. Check with them and if they are tax-exempt follow these instructions to enter the information in TurboTax:

  1. Launch TurboTax
  2. Select Deductions and Credits
  3. Scroll down to Dependent Care Credit and select Edit/Add
  4. Complete the information for your child/children that you paid daycare for and select Done
  5. Add or Edit the Provider information
  6. Select Other and Tax-exempt organization as shown below
  7. Graphical user interface, text, application, email

Description automatically generatedSelect Continue.

You will not be able to e-file your tax returns since you did not provide an EIN.
