You can be both a self-employed person and a W-2 wage earner at the same time if your 1099 misc earnings are from a second job, or if you were self-employed for only part of the year.

You will need to use Turbo Tax Self Employed online or Turbo Tax Home and Business desktop to complete your tax return.

All items related to your business will be entered under the Business Tab located at the top of the screen. Select the Business Tab and then, because this is your first time reporting a business, select walk me through everything. You will start with the Business Income and Expense section.

Your W-2 income will be entered under the Personal Tab.
