Did you get a W-2 or did you receive a 1099Misc for the security job?

Was your mileage from home to your job and back home again?

It depends. If you were a W2 employee or this was your regular principal location for self-employment, then no, mileage is not deductible.

If you were an independent contractor and NOT a W2 employee and this was not your regular location (example..you worked security at 8 different locations) then yes, you can deduct your mileage. To Enter your self-Employed Mileage click the following:

  • Income and Expenses
  • Edit/Add next to Self-Employment income and expenses
  • Review next to the business (Your business income must be entered first..see below if you have not entered business income)
  • Click Add Expenses for this work (You will be prompted to upgrade to TurboTax Self-Employed)
  • Scroll down click Vehicle Expenses
  • Continue
  • Walk through to enter your mileage

If you need to enter self-employed income and have not.  You will need to click the following once fully logged into your return:

  • Tax Home
  • Federal
  • Wages and Income
  • Scroll down and click Add More income
  • See list of all income
  • Click Show More next to Self-Employment
  • Start next to Self-Employment
  • As you walk through the entries you will be prompted to upgrade depending on your entries either while entering income or when it asks you to enter your expenses.
