If you are an employee (you get a W-2) you cannot deduct any job-related expenses. The new tax law eliminates the deduction for employee business expenses for the years 2018 through 2025.

This was updated on the irs website on March 7 of 2019. So are you saying it would no longer apply?

Wow, what a mess! That IRS web page is totally outdated. Whoever reviewed it on March 7, 2019, did a terrible job. It does not apply at all to 2018 and later, and the fact that it no longer applies was known since December 2017 when the new law was passed. I reported the error to the IRS.gov Website Help Desk. I don't know if my report will do any good, or how long it will take them to fix it.

As for your question, what I said earlier is correct. There is no deduction for employee business expenses for the years 2018 through 2025. There isn't even a place on the new tax forms where you could claim such a deduction.

The page that you saw on the IRS web site now has a note at the top that says "This is an archival or historical document and may not reflect current law, policies or procedures."
