I volunteered for the National Park Service and received a 1099 for my daily stipend ($15/day). What expenses do I claim?

I lived in the park and received the stipend to cover food costs. Distance to the park was over 2,000 miles.

You can deduct the volunteering mileage and your out of pocket expenses while volunteering, such as lodging and meals (minus the stipend), rental car expenses. All items are deducted as charitable contribution.

In TurboTax, you may enter your mileage and travel expenses, out-of-pocket pocket expenses as follows:

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Deductions & Credits
  3. Charitable Donations, select Donations to Charity in 2016; once charity name is entered,  select Mileage and travel expenses; enter total cost for your travel.
