I traveled to NC to give aid for Hurricane Florence and then 2 other weekends to FL to help with Michael. Can I claim my miles as a charitable tax credit? How?

Charitable miles are deductible as itemized expenses.  There is not a tax credit for them.

Whether you can deduct them as itemized expenses depends on who you were volunteering with.  If you were volunteering for a qualified charitable organization then yes such as the red cross, then yes, you can claim these miles as a deduction IF you are itemizing your return.

If you were just volunteering through a group of people not recognized as a charitable organization, then no, these miles are not deductible.

If you are taking the standard deduction instead of itemized deductions, then these miles would not be deductible either.

If you are itemizing your return you will enter these miles by clicking

  • Federal
  • Deductions and Credits
  • See All Tax Breaks
  • Show More Next to Charitable Donations
  • Start next to Donations to Charity in 2018
  • Add next to Mileage and Travel Expenses
  • Enter your miles and travel expenses including lodging and meal expenses
