I teach online college classes from home. Is my internet a qualified expense?

I am a college professor and I all of my classes are online. I work from home 2-3 times per week. I want to know if any of my monthly internet bill is a qualified expense that I can use as a deduction.

Yes, your internet expense is deductible as it is an ordinary and necessary expanse.

For reporting purposes, you should apportion the expense between personal and business use.

To deduct employee business expenses, you must have enough itemized deductions (ie. Medical, mortgage interest, property taxes, charitable giving, ect) to exceed your Standard Deduction. If you itemize, your deduction is limited to the extent that it exceeds 2% of your Adjusted Gross Income.

To report  employee business expenses in TurboTax:

  • Click My Account (Top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type in 2106.

Highlight it and select GO, and follow the prompts
