I sold a house last year in CO and had taxes withheld, capital gains I believe. We moved for the reason of a job and to WI. From looking into it we should be able to get a refund. How do we go about that?

Assuming you lived in the house until you moved, you may qualify for the home sale exclusion and TurboTax will walk you through that.

If you have a document that shows the federal withholding and you haven't been able to enter that anywhere you can do that using the steps below. Use the same steps if you sent an estimated tax payment in yourself, just use that selection.

Sign into your TurboTax Premier account the enter in the following way (online or desktop).

  • Federal Taxes
  • Deductions &  Credits
  • Estimates and Other Taxes Paid (> Estimates if you made the payment)
  • Other Income Taxes
  • Scroll to Withholding not already entered on W2 or 1099 > Start
  • Enter the federal withholding here

While you are logged into your TurboTax (Premier) account start here (online or desktop).

  1. Sign into your account and select your current return.
  2. Select  Search Box on the top right
  3. Search for sale of home > Jump to sale of home
  4. Follow the interview to enter or review your information.
