If the $6,000 in premiums you paid were for health insurance purchased on your own through a healthcare marketplace and you paid for this insurance with after-tax dollars, you can include these premiums in your calculation of medical expenses to be included in itemized deductions.

The $2,500 that you have to pay back is also deductible, but not in 2016. You can included that amount as a medical expense in the year it is actually paid. You will be paying the amount back in 2017, so it is includable in medical expenses for the 2017 tax year.

Medical expenses must be more than 10% of your adjusted gross income (7.5% if over age 65) to be included in your itemized deductions.
