Are you itemizing deductions like mortgage interest, etc.?  If so, you can enter the sales tax you paid for the new car.

SALES TAX

You can enter the sales tax you paid for the car you purchased in 2022 by going to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid> Sales Tax.  You will be asked if you paid sales tax on a major purchase, and you will be able to enter the sales tax you paid for your new vehicle.

Sales tax is an itemized deduction. “Major purchases” that you can enter for the sales tax deduction include:

Motor Vehicles (cars, trucks, motor homes, RV’s, sport utility vehicles and off-road vehicles

Aircraft or boats

Mobile homes

Manufactured housing

Building materials for major home improvements

You cannot deduct: furniture, jewelry, home electronics such as TV’s or computers

Yes, if you are self-employed and you used the car for business purposes in December, you may claim your car on your income tax return.

There are two methods of calculating the business use of your car. You’ll want to calculate your vehicle expenses each way and then choose the method that yields the largest deduction for you.

  1. The Actual Expenses method is based on the expenses you actually incur in the operation of your vehicle.
  2. The second method you can use to compute the business use of your car is called Standard Mileage.
