I pay property tax on cars in virginia. I believe that is deductible, but turbotax is not giving me any place to enter the tax. It only provides space for real estate

Yes, you are correct. Virginia property tax on cars is deductible. Some counties add other fees to the tax bill, but only the portion for personal property tax is deductible.

Here is how to enter this in TurboTax Online:

  1. Navigate to Federal Taxes > Deductions & Credits > Add more deductions > Cars and Other Things You Own > Personal Property Taxes
  2. On the screen that asks "Did you pay personal property taxes in 2025?"  select YES.
  3. Enter the amount you paid to your Virginia locality.

Thanks. I also learned (after playing around a little more) that it's buried in the "car registration fees" line. TurboTax should really change the name of that line to "auto registration fees and taxes" or something similar. Cheers.

Yes ...car registration fees is the right area...but only the Property tax assessed on the vehicle can be used.

In  my area (in NC)  we have some city and county flat fees, that should never be included .
