In Social Security Tax or tax on your social security income?
If you are talking about the social security tax, you would not get that refunded when filing a tax return and in general, unless you had excess withheld, it is not refundable.
If you are talking about having taxes withheld from your social security benefits, did you enter the amount withheld when you were entering your 1099-SSA? If you did, you would see this included on line 33 of your form 1040.
Thanks for the reply. I ended up figuring it out by going to the tax summary on the left and then the draft 1040. I was able to see the credit I received for the overage I paid in Social Security tax for the year.
Basically, I was in one position with my company for a portion of the year and paid a certain amount of ss tax on income. I changed jobs which resulted in actually working for another corporate entity and the Social Security tax apparently starts over from a withholding perspective…. my employer stated I would get any overpayment refunded by the government… I was looking to confirm that credit was actually applied to my final tax calculation or if it would be handled separately.
thanks again for replying
Were the EINs (Employer Identification Numbers) the same for the two corporate entities? If the EINs are different, then TurboTax will calculate the excess of the SS tax withheld, and place it on line 11 of Schedule 3 (1040), to be refunded to you. However, historically, if the EINs are the same, TurboTax will just tell you to go get the excess from your employer, since for all TurboTax knows, they are the same employer, having the same EINs.
Anyway, let us know if you need anything else.
Thanks. Yep, different EINs !
