I paid $6000 real estate taxes for 2015 in 2018. This made the total for 2018 over the $10,000 cap. Is there any way I can deduct the excess from the prior year?

Unfortunately there is no way to deduct the amount that exceeds the $10,000 limit. If you had paid them in 2017 or earlier, they would have been deductible.
