You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You should still leave your child's information in your return and Turbo Tax will ask questions to not claim the exemption but still ask information about other credits and deductions which may apply. Please check all boxes which apply, such as how many months in 2016 did the child live with you. When you see the question, "Do you have an agreement with the other parent about who can claim him?", select Yes and Yes, the other parent will claim for 2016 per our legal agreement.
You may still qualify for the Earned Income Credit, even if your qualifying dependent is claimed as an exemption on another return.
You can review the information by clicking on the Personal Info tab.
A qualifying child is your:
- Son
- Daughter
- Adopted child
- Grandchild
- Stepchild
- Eligible foster child (see below)
- Brother, sister, stepbrother,
stepsister, niece, or nephew
At the end of the year a qualifying child must be:
- Under age 19, or
- Under age 24 and a full-time student, or
- Any age and permanently and totally disabled
Also, the child must have:
- Lived with you in the U.S. for more than
6 months during the year, or

I filed and forgot to take off a child
Since you have already filed, you will need to amend your return. Please see this TurboTax Help page on how to amend.
Note that you need to wait until the IRS has processed your initial e-filed return; generally this is when when the IRS has sent you your refund (if any).
