I need to claim a child as a dependent for other dependent credit instead of child tax credit. My child does not have an ITIN yet, I need the tax return to apply for it.

To get the program to do that use  999 - 88 - 9999 for the ITIN when ask for the number  ... then when you print out the return "white out" that number before you mail it in attached to the W-7.

Thank you for responding to this question. I have exactly the same situation and I have followup question

I will file 1040 and apply for ITIN before 15 April 2020. Will this make me eligible to claim other dependent credit? If the answer is yes will I have to file amendment to get the credit because I cannot claim ODC in my current 1040?

Yes it will ... but you must attach the return to the W-7 and mail it to the W-7 address.

Thank you. So when I send my tax return along with W7 to IRS should it already have the amount of other dependent credit on it?

Yes, because with the ITIN you will qualify for it.

Thank you.. I entered the 1040 return in turbotax and under SSN# I mentioned 'applied for'. It did not calculate the $500 ODC. I also did not work with 999 - 88 - 9999 as the SSN .  When I clicked check return it gave me suggestion that Dependent does not qualify for ODC because SSN is applied for / invalid. Can I override this calculation and enter the ODC myself somewhere on the form? If this does not work the only other option for me will be to not do taxes through turbotax and fill in the forms manually

Don't know what you did wrong ... I suggest you delete the child and start again ...

You should also verify that you qualify for the credit for other dependents.

See the IRS website: Here’s how the credit for other dependents can benefit taxpayers for further information.
