I messed up! I am not sure what I was thinking but I DID move in 2016 and I didn't claim my new house or my car I traded in for. How can I fix this? THANK YOU!

If you haven’t filed your return yet, you can go back in to any section and make changes.

You may have deductible moving expenses because you relocated for a new job, or Home Mortgage Interest and Real Estate Taxes if you bought a new home. You may be able to deduct sales tax on your new automobile, and registration fees if they qualify. If you use your car for business, you may be able to deduct expenses under Employee Expenses.

To find where to enter these expenses in TurboTax Online:

  • Go to the top of your screen and choose My Account.
  • Choose Tools.
  • Choose Topic Search, then type in your topic (such as moving expenses) and click Go.

See the screenshot below.

If you already filed your taxes, you'll have to wait to see if your return is accepted by the IRS. If it gets rejected, you can correct the errors and resubmit the return. If the return is accepted,  you’ll need to amend your 2016 state return.

Wait until you either receive your refund or (if you owed money) until your check has cleared or the money has been debited from your account.

Then you can amend your return. The following is a link to the amend instructions, but as you can see,  at this point the 2016 instructions won’t be available until February, so keep checking back. Amended returns can’t be e-filed. They must be printed out and mailed.
