I don't know why it says on the HSA Summary screen that you can make changes with the implication that you can make these changes on this screen.
You need to return to the beginning of the HSA interview (i.e., start over) to make the changes that will be reflected on the HSA Summary screen.
As an aside, you probably know that personal HSA contributions (made outside the employer) are entered on the screen "Let's enter [your name]'s HSA contributions" on the second line.
I too am having difficulty entering additional direct contributions to my HSA, above and beyond what my employer contributed and is shown on my W2. I have attempted to re-start the HSA questions by deleting the 1099-SAs and trying to start over entering the HSA details. At no point did I get a question as to whether I added additional after tax contributions directly to my HSA. Therefore I cannot enter the additional contributions which would actually reduce my taxation for 2025. Please help me resolve this matter. I have also contacted Turbo Tax support and they in turn submitted a ticket as they couldn't resolve my issue over the phone, even with screen sharing. They suspect I've run into some bug or missing aspect of the software for 2025. Hard for me to think Turbo Tax forgot to include the ability to contribute to HSAs other than through an employer.
I think Turbo Tax has a bug in their system for this issue. I figured out a work around, but it wasn't ideal. I had to delete my tax return and start over. Once I did that, I was able to see the screen I needed to enter in the necessary information. The screen will say "Let's enter ____'s HSA contributions". The screen pre-fills the employer/payroll contributions from box 12 of W-2 and under it there is a line available to fill in called, "Contributions personally made (not through your employer)"...yay! It allowed me to put in the personal amount we contributed and gave me a larger refund.
Originally, when I first went into Turbo Tax, I didn't have any forms from HSA yet (5498-SA or 1099-SA), so I skipped past these screens. I didn't know Turbo Tax wouldn't let me enter it later once I received the forms. Yikes....definitely something wrong in their system. I hope this yelps you.
Thank you, it does seem like a bug. Deleting and restarting was my last resort, but I greatly appreciate knowing that it will likely work if I take that approach. Thanks so much for your quick and excellent response.
Same problem, can update it in the desktop product but that will not carry over to the online product and no ability to add self HSA contributions through HSA screens or W2 screens.
Turbotax support never got back to me after I spent over an hour on the phone with them trying to fix the matter. They told me I should expect a call back in 1 to 2 days but they never contacted me. I decided to delete everything and start over as this had worked for another user. I just started today so I'll let you know how I get on. I'm honestly not feeling confident because after entering W2's I was not prompted with any questions on whether I contributed additional funds directly to my HSA. Turbotax needs to fix this issue promptly or I'll be forced to switch to a competing product.
@user17704037846 To enter HSA contributions not made through your employer in TurboTax online:
YOur description above does not work, at least in the online version. If you didn't answer the questions in order of how Turbotax presents them after you start by entering your personal details and then your W2's, never get the question with the lower box. If like me, you jumped around and added forms as they come in from the different financial institutions, including HSA data, you can never get back to the question of how much you directly contributed to the HSA over and above employer contributions. There is a bug in the software. I eventually deleted my entire return (hours of work) and started again. Because I then went in the exact order the online version requires, I eventually got the question that allowed me to enter my additional direct HSA contributions. What I've learned form this is don't be proactive and jump around in the online version, wait until you have everything you are going to need to complete your taxes and enter in the order the tool asks.
I wish this was true, but there still appears to be no way to ever find questions or a way to update information related to 4. The next screen will say "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions". You can enter the contributions you made outside the employer plan in the lower box (the top box has the employer contributions automatically carried over from your W2). I can get questions about additional employer contributions, overfunding a prior year, etc., but somehow never a way to enter direct contributions by me for this tax year.
