I’m trying to add a child tax credit, but it’s declining me for not being a bona fide resident of Puerto Rico but never even ask if I’m a US resident!?

Follow these steps since something has a wrong answer and is throwing off the program:

  1. Return to My Info or Personal Info.
  2. Review your mailing address is a US state and not foreign.
  3. Did you live in another state? Check that Foreign or US Possession is not selected.
  4. Go to deductions and credits
  5. Select Child and other dependent Tax Credits
  6. Did (child) live with you in the US for more than half the year?
  7. This must be a yes when true. If no is selected, you are assumed to be a PR resident since asking for credit.

Hi @AmyC I restarted my entire application and completed the steps again, but it still just prompts to PR resident. There should be nothing in my application that should infer that.

What state do you live in?  Did you double check your address?

Hi @Vanessa A  We live in Louisiana and my address is correct.

@mark Click on My Info on the left side of the online program screen.  Edit your personal information.  When asked for your resident state, choose Louisiana from the dropdown.  When asked if you made money in any other states or that you lived in any other states answer NO.

For your spouse, if Married and Filing Jointly, make the same is entered for them.
