Do you also have enough other itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction.  Meeting the threshold for medical deductions is only part of it.

Many taxpayers are surprised this year because their itemized deductions are not having the same effect as they did on past tax returns.  The new higher standard deduction and the elimination of certain deductions, as well as the cap on state and local taxes have had a major impact.

Your itemized deductions have to be more than your standard deduction before you will see a change in your tax owed or tax refund.  The deductions you enter do not necessarily count “dollar for dollar;” many of them are subject to meeting  tough thresholds—medical expenses, for example, must meet a threshold that is pretty hard to reach.  The software program uses all the IRS rules that apply to the expenses you enter, and it tells you if you have enough to use your itemized deductions or if using the standard deduction is more advantageous for you.  Under the new tax laws, some deductions have been capped—there is a $10,000 limit to the itemized deductions for state, local, property and sales taxes.

Your standard deduction lowers your taxable income.  It is not a refund

2018 Standard Deductions:

Single   $12,000  (+ $1600 65 or older)

Married Filing Separately    $12,000  (+ $1300 65 or older)

Married Filing Jointly  $24,000  (+ $1300 each spouse 65 or older)

Head of Household  $18,000  (+ $1600 65 or older

Look at line 8 of your Form 1040 to see your standard or itemized deductions.

I am over 2000 dollars over the 7.5% medical threshold.  It is not effecting my refund.

And again--Do you have other itemized deductions?  if not, then the medical expenses will have no effect.  Did you pay mortgage interest?  Property tax?  Donate to charity?  The $2000 medical expense deduction will not be enough unless your other deductions combine with it to exceed the standard deduction for your filing status.

It says my $2325 medical expense deduction doesn't count yet because my tax due already includes the best tax break, which is the standard $24000.

That is what I have been trying to tell you---and why I asked if you have any other itemized deductions like mortgage interest or property taxes.

Sorry---tax reform has produced some pretty unpleasant results for some people.

Hello, I understand the $24,000 standard deduction.  Last year we had 38,000 deduction. This year it wouldn’t allow me to deduct tuition and mortgage interest.  It sited the 10,000 cap.  I don’t want to pay 8000 a year.  Our W4’s have 0 deductions.  What are we doing wrong?

The $10,000 cap is for state and local taxes--not mortgage interest.  And did you pay tuition for a dependent?  What education credit did you try to get?

Your post does not even indicate what version of TurboTax you are using?  Are you using desktop or online?  What version?
