I have a health savings account that my employer puts 1,500.00 into each year. I have put in 2,200 from my checking account into this as well. Can I itemize the 2,200?

Yes, assuming that all qualifications for contributing to the Health Savings Account (HSA) have been met, your after-tax contribution to the HSA would be a deduction on your tax return.

You would enter this contribution in the HSA section of your return and the deduction will be included on line 25 of your Form 1040.

Use these steps to enter your after-tax contribution:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

  • This opens a box where you can type in “hsa” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to hsa

  • Click on the blue “Jump to hsa” link

  • Answer Yes on the screen titled, “Did you put money into an HSA in 2017?

  • Enter your after-tax contributions in the Any contributions you personally made (not through your employer) box

Note:  For 2019, the HSA deductible contribution will be reported on Form 1040 Schedule 1 Line 12 and included on Form 1040 Line 8a.
