I have a carryover for residential Energy Credits from 2016 but it wants to carry them over again to 2018. Why can't I use it this year?

There is an order in which the credits on your tax return are used.  If the preceding credits have reduced your tax bill to zero, then the credits which can be carried forward - such as the Residential Energy Credit - will carry forward to reduce your tax bill in the future.

You may wish to look at your Form 1040 or the Tax Summary to see if this is the case.

The Form 1040 is available in the TurboTax desktop software.  The Tax Summary is found under Tools in the online software.
