I had significant hail storm damage in 2016 but did not get repairs executed until 2017. Can I make a claim in 2017 or do I need to go back to 2016 tax year?

The delay was caused by having to go back and forth with my insurance company as to what they would cover.

Report the loss in the year you determined the amount of the loss.
