I had medical expenses while not having any insurance. What can I actually claim in terms of deductions?

You can deduct things like medical and dental fees, co-pays, eyeglasses, prescriptions, lab fees, surgery, hospital facility fees and mileage to/from all of the aforementioned at 17 cents per mile

But did you know you can also deduct dentures, contact lens cleaning solution, hearing aid batteries, crutches, mileage to and from the doctor, and expenses for a service dog? See this IRS page on medical expenses to learn which expenses you're allowed to deduct.

You can deduct medical expenses if you itemize and the total expenses for you, your spouse, and your dependents exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. The deduction is limited to the expenses above and beyond this amount.

For example, if you're 48 years old with an AGI of $50,000 and you incurred $4,750 in medical and dental expenses last year, you could deduct $1,000 (the amount in excess of 7.5% of your AGI, or $3,750), assuming you're itemizing.

You won't be able to deduct your expenses on your federal return if you're taking the standard deduction, which about 2/3 of all taxpayers do.

Note: You can only deduct expenses you actually paid in tax year 2017, if you are filing a 2017 income tax return.
