I had a new roof put on my house in 2016. It cost $6200. Can i write the cost, or any portion of the cost off on my taxes this year?

No you can't deduct the cost of a roof on your personal residence.

If it is a rental house, then it gets capitalized and is depreciated.

No you can't deduct the cost of a roof on your personal residence.
