I had a home office in the home I sold in the first 7 months of 2017 and one in my new home for the last 3. I am told that I am only permitted to claim a single office.

You can have 2 home offices. Assuming the home office was as an employee and not a self employed home office, then follow the steps below.

.For an employee:

  • In your open return, select My Account
  • Tools
  • Topic Search
  • Type 'job expenses, employee' in the box, then select GO

Complete the interview questions for the 1st office (dates and the 7 months usage of prior home).  On the page, Did you have more than one home office?, select No. This question is referring to more than one home office for the same home.

Continue until you reach the Home Office Summary. Select the 'Add a Home Office' link to enter the details of your 2nd home office in the 2nd home with the dates and last 3 months for usage.
