If you have an HSA and you had activity in your HSA in 2018 (either contributions by either you or your employer to the HSA or distributions from your HSA), then the IRS requires you to add form 8889 to your tax return. As you are already aware, the Deluxe product is required for form 8889.

For example, if you have a code W in box 12 on your W-2, then this shows contributions to your HSA, and you will be unable to complete your tax return in the Basic product. And, no, you can't remove the code W from your W-2, because you will get a letter from the IRS (they already have copies of your HSA documents).

Form 8889 can be a bit overwhelming for most taxpayers, so it is a good thing that once you enter your HSA data (for most taxpayers, it's the code W on the W-2 and a 1099-SA), TurboTax will fill the form out correctly and attach it to your return.

If, by chance, you actually don't have an HSA, then you can delete all traces of the HSA in your tax return by doing the following:

The safest - although brute force - way to fix this is to do the following in this order:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview or continue with your return
