I entered my Property Taxes paid and my Refund did not change. Are Property Taxes Paid deductible? If so why didn't my refund change?

I was getting 3300 back and I entered 5000 in Property Taxes and the refund did not change I thought Property Taxes were Deductible? Why no change in Turbo Tax?

Property taxes are deductible but only as an itemized deduction.  You get either the standard deduction or itemized deductions, not both.  If your standard deduction is 12.2K, then you need itemized deductions of more than 12.2K before you will see any change.

TurboTax will use the higher number which will maximize your tax return.  Once the total of your itemized deductions (mortgage interest, property taxes, medical expenses, charity donations, etc.) exceeds your standard deduction (of your filing status), TurboTax will make the switch for you.

This may be your welcome to the fascinating world of AMT? A very sad place where your hard work has earned you a future of more tax ( a lot more) and the same benefits.
