To switch foreign taxes from a deduction to a credit in TurboTax and remove it from "Other Deductible Expenses", follow these steps:
1. Go to Foreign Taxes Section: Navigate to the Deductions & Credits area, then to the Foreign Taxes screen.
2. Choose Your Entry Method: If asked, select I'll choose what I work on.
3. Start or Update Foreign Taxes: Under Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, select Start or Update next to Foreign Taxes.
4. Select Credit Instead of Deduction: On the screen asking Do You Want the Deduction or the Credit?, choose Take a Credit and continue.
5. Complete the Form 1116 Sections: Enter your foreign income, taxes, and expenses as prompted.
The software will remove the foreign tax deduction from Other Deductible Expenses and apply the foreign tax credit instead. This typically works out better for most people.
If you have trouble, try deleting the foreign tax deduction entry before re-entering it as a credit.
