You can't enter a donation for a car with a deduction value of more than $500 unless the charity has given you a form 1098-C form explaining how they disposed of the car. (For example, if they sold it to raise money for their other operations, you can only deduct the amount of money they actually made, and not the Blue Book or some other value.)
The charity does not have to issue the 1098-C right away. In some cases you must file without the donation, then file an amended return to add the donation if the charity does not send the 1098-C until after the filing deadline.
You must be in the section for charitable donations on the Deductions and Credits page. (If you are being asked about registration, you are in the wrong place.) There are some boxes to check for what did you donate (I think the choices are money, items, and mileage). Check items, then in the list of items, check Car. You will be asked for the details from your form 1098-C.
