If you indeed made a contribution while you were not in an HDHP, you should contact the HSA plan administrator as quickly as possible and start the "Mistaken Contribution" process to get that contribution returned to you, preferably completed before April 18th.
You are indeed allowed to keep your HSA even after you no longer have an HDHP, and even take distributions - you just can't contribute to the HSA any longer.
I am not sure where this message you are referring to appears - are you perhaps married (and the spouse has an HSA)?
But the question is moot, since you weren't in an HDHP anyway and the Family/Self plan reference is to your HDHP. It sounds as if you should be entering "None" for your type of coverage.
