No 1098 was issued because it was at the end of the year.

what mortgage expense if you paid nothing on the mortgage. however, points would be deductible in the year of purcahse.

If it was your primary or second home and you itemize deductions you can deduct the mortgage.  A lender does not have to issue a 1098 if the interest paid was less than $600.
