I am supposed to get a total of $3600 for the child tax credit. I and my spouse received a total of $1800 in advanced credit. How is this overpaid?

Income level and age of child are within limits of the $3600 child tax credit.

If you have one child under the age of 6 and you received $1800 in advance payments you can get another $1800---not $3600.     Look on line 28 of your Form 1040 for the $1800.

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.

The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.   Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.

Ok, so $3600 credit and the two of you only got $1800 that leaves $1800 you should be getting as a credit. On the input screen, you inputted $900 for each of you or some total that adds to $1800. You should see the credit on line 28 of your 1040 for $1800.

To view your return,

  • If you are using the online version:
    1. go to Tax Tools,
    2. then select Tools,
    3. select View Tax Summary,
    4. on the left side, select Preview My 1040.
  • In the desktop program, switch to forms mode.
