I am NJ resident and contributed to ABLE account for a minor kid. Turbo tax is not letting me enter & getting message that I don't qualify for this credit for federal.

If it is not entered in federal section there is no place in the state section. NJ allows deduction for the ABLE contribution.

ABLE allow individuals with disabilities to save up to $19k  annually (as of 2026) for qualified expenses without losing federal benefits like SSI or Medicaid. Contributions are tax deductible on NJ state tax return, earnings are tax-deferred, and withdrawals for disability expenses are tax-free if used for qualified disability expenses Federally.

Lastly, you may be able to contribute up to $2,000 of contributions to an ABLE account and qualify for the SAVERS CREDIT if your single, which can offset federal income taxes you could possibly owe overal
l. (FORM 8880)

To
enter ABLE contributions Go to Federal Taxes>deductions and credits>choose what you work on
Go to education> ESA and 529 Qualified Tuition programs
After you have finished with this section,
go to:
Retirement and Investments> Retirement Saving Contribution Credit. There will be questions in this section that address your Able contributions and distributions. "Deductions & Credits" > "Education" > "ESA and 529 Qualified Tuition programs".

Proceed to the NJ State return. Look for sections related to "New Jersey College Affordability Deductions" or "Other Adjustments" to claim any eligible NJ-specific state-level benefits.

Thanks for your detailed response. I have checked those sections again but no luck.

I have only contributed to ABLE and not withdrawn yet so looking to use section retirement savings contribution credit in Federal Deductions & Credits section. This is the right place as the Learn More link shows ABLE account. But when I try to enter,  I get the message "It turns out you don't qualify for this credit" and it is not letting me enter the contribution amount. This is correct message as federal income limit is higher than 79k but there is no separate place to enter in the NJ state section. It should allow to enter in federal section and use for NJ state to calculate the tax break for the state income tax.

It seems a bug in the Turbo Tax software. Whom to contact to report a bug.

@1atiwary

NJ Contributions must be made using post-taxed dollars,  only the income grows tax free unless  you are eligible for the Savers Credit would the contribution be tax free.   There is a bill in NJ for  NJ A3628  that has NOT passed that would allow taxpayers with an annual gross income of $150,000 or less who open a new ABLE account will receive a one-time dollar-for-dollar matching grant of up to $750 on their initial deposit, though these incentives are contingent on state funding and the Department of Human Services may adjust allocation if appropriations are insufficient.

 Eligibility for Saver’s
Credit:
• Also known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit
• Allows a tax credit to low and moderate income taxpayers who
make contributions to retirement accounts
• Saver’s Credit can be taken for your contributions to an ABLE
account if you’re the designated beneficiary and you meet the
following:
1. Age 18 or older;
2. Not a full-time student; and
3. Not claimed as a dependent on another person’s return
• Amount of credit is a certain percentage of your contribution
depending on your gross annual income; Maximum of $2,000/year

Who’s eligible?
To be eligible, individuals must meet two requirements:
1) Your disability was present before the age 26; and
2) One of the following is true:
➢ You are eligible for SSI or SSDI because of a disability
➢ You experience blindness as determined by the Social
Security Act; OR
➢ You have a similarly severe disability with a written
diagnosis from a licensed physician that can be produced
if requested.

Thanks for the detailed response. Yes it is a post taxed dollar contribution and all the criteria for saver's credit is met. I am not looking for dollar for dollar match grant but the credit/deduction for the contribution to ABLE account for NJ state return.

The problem is that Turbo Tax is not even allowing me to enter that contribution. When I click on retirement contribution, it just giving message that I don't qualify. That could be the right message for federal but still it should allow me to enter the contribution made in 2025. First time opened the account and contributed.

Even Google Gemini also says that it should allow in retirement section and NJ state allows the deduction.

Any update on this?  I'm facing the same problem.

According to the National ABLE Resource Center, New Jersey does not offer any deduction for ABLE account contributions.  This website offers the ability compare state plans to one another and the website clearly states that.

New Jersey does have a College Affordability Deduction that is available for gross incomes under $200,000 that gets reported on lines 37a to 37c.  But there is no line on the New Jersey NJ-1040 for reporting ABLE account contributions.

I gave full response. NJ allows after tax contributions only.  Proposals never passed. It grows tax free.
