I am military and my resident state is TX. I bought a new car in GA where I am stationed. How do I claim the sales tax? If I claim I lived in GA I get an error when doing the smart check.

You may deduct the sales tax you paid up to the amount that your resident state, Texas, allows.
To enter sales tax in to TurboTax:
- Click the Federal Taxes tab at the top (or the Personal tab if using Home & Business)
- Then, Deductions & Credits
- Scroll down to the "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid section", click Show more
- Next to "Sales Tax" click Start or Update
You would enter the place(s) you lived, and all major purchases you made including your out-of-state purchase and the rate you were taxed in that state. TurboTax will calculate what your Deduction Allowed will be for your out of state purchase.
