I am a member of Vermont Search and Rescue K-9 - can I deduct my mileage for my training?

We traveled 3315 miles for training in 2017 and we are a volunteer organization.  Where to I file for my mileage deduction?

Yes, you can deduction the mileage as a donation on your Federal return as follows:

1.  Go to Federal, then Deductions and Credits.

2.  Select Charitable Donations, you'll see Donations to Charity in 2017, select.

3.  Answer YES, you want to make donations.

4.  Add the Vermont Search and Rescue K-9 as the description of the charity.

5.  Click ADD mileage and travel expenses.  The next page will ask for a brief description of travel, you can insert Training.  You will also need to enter the date of the training and total mileage.  TurboTax will calculate the mileage credit for the donation.

The following information relates to claiming expenses of travel as a donation:

 - Parking and toll fees
 - Air, rail, and bus transportation
 - Out-of-pocket expenses for your car
 - Taxi fares or other costs of transportation between the airport or station and your hotel
 - Lodging costs and meals

"Travel expenses are deductible if they are directly related to the charitable service you're providing. However, you cannot deduct these expenses if there is a significant element of personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation involved in the travel. You must have substantial duties connected with the charitable organization while you're there."
