I am a co-owner of an S-Corp. My two children and I are on my wife's healthcare plan. Can we deduct the medical portion of healthcare that she pays?

Am I allowed to deduct my wife's insurance premium if I am a co-owner of an S-Corp?  We do not have a formal insurance plan for my company but I along with my two children are covered under my wife's plan.  I heard we can deduct but I'm not 100%.

If the insurance was under your name or in the name of your S-Corp, you would be able to deduct your health insurance premiums as an adjustment on the first page of Form 1040. See the following from IRS Don't Miss the Health Insurance Deduction if You're Self-Employed.

  • If you’re an S corporation shareholder, the policy can be in your name or the S corporation’s name and either of you can pay the premiums. If the policy is in your name and you pay the premiums, the S corporation must reimburse you and include the premiums as wage income on your Form W-2.
