HSA Excess but it wasn't

I am really confused on this one.  I am just under the allowed contribution for family plan.  My box 12w is $7,000.00.  But Turbo Tax keeps stating I need to withdraw the $7k or it's an excess contribution.  It's a HD family plan so I'm not sure why it keeps coming up.  It's adding $2k to my tax bill but I didn't over fund my HSA??

HSA Excess but it wasn't

Entering information into your return regarding Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions is a two-step process

The first step occurs when you enter your W-2 that includes contributions to the HSA.  Then, the second step is to verify your eligibility to contribute to the HSA due to coverage under a High Deductible Health Plan.  TurboTax should give you a reminder to work on your HSA a little later in the process to complete that second step.  Once complete, the message about excess contributions should disappear.

If you have not already done so, use these steps to go to the section of your return to verify your eligibility to contribute to the HSA:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “HSA” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to HSA
  • Click on the blue “Jump to HSA” link and enter your information
