Just work it through. I don't know if you're using the online version or the desktop version of the program that you physically install on your computer. But as a first time user, as well as a first time "doing it myself" tax filer, I HIGHLY encourage you use the desktop version of the program you physically install on your computer. It's much eaiser to follow and understand, and significantly easier to use.
Since you're doing this for the first time, you will make mistakes (count on it) because you will misunderstand questions, not read everything before making selections, and just flat out "try different things" for no reason other than "because I can". It's how we all learn. (99% of what I know about the program, is what NOT to do, and I didn't learn it by not doing it.)
So with the desktop version, starting over is as fast and easy as deleting your .tax2016 file, restarting the program and beginning anew. With the online version, you have to jump through a few hoops (from the perspective of a first time user) and "hope" you do it right so you don't have to wait on hold for support to do it for you.
The program really is easy. Just follow the prompts and make sure you read every single word on every single screen, before making selections or entering data. Of course, if you have questions along the way, just post them in this forum and someone will jump in to help you toot-sweet.
