How to remove medical expenses because I am taking standard deduction

Follow the steps below to remove Schedule A (which lists medical and other itemized deductions) and switch to the Standard Deduction for your federal return.

 

Delete Schedule A

 

  1. Log into your return (or click Take me to my return if not already in).
  2. On the left-side menu, click Tax Tools.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select Tools.
  4. Click Topic Search.
  5. Click the delete a form hyperlink.
  6. Select and delete the Schedule A form.

Choose the Standard Deduction

 

  1. Locate the Search box in the top, right corner of the screen.
  2. Type the exact phrase: itemized deductions, choosing (ensure you include the comma).
  3. Click the "jump to" link that appears.

Important note on state returns
 

Even if you choose the standard deduction on your federal return, your state return may still let you to itemize deductions. If this is the case, you do not need to delete your itemized expenses; you can simply select the standard deduction.


 

The following states let itemized deductions to be claimed only on the state return:

 

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New York
