If you are claiming a child on your tax return and if you are eligible to claim the child, Turbo Tax will help you claim the child tax credit if you qualify. You don't need to do anything additional in your return to qualify. Here are the qualifying child tests.

  1. Relationship – the taxpayer’s child or stepchild (whether by blood or adoption), foster child, sibling or stepsibling, or a descendant of one of these.
  2. Residence – has the same principal residence as the taxpayer for more than half the tax year. Exceptions apply, in certain cases, for children of divorced or separated parents, kidnapped children, temporary absences, and for children who were born or died during the year.
  3. Age – must be under the age of 19 at the end of the tax year, or under the age of 24 if a full-time student for at least five months of the year, or be permanently and totally disabled at any time during the year.
  4. Support – did not provide more than one-half of his/her own support for the year
  • Citizenship - the person must be a US citizen, US resident alien, or a resident of Canada or Mexico
  • Not a qualifying child – if the person meets all the requirements of a qualifying child for taxpayer or someone else, cannot be claimed as a qualifying relative.
  • Relationship – the person must have lived with taxpayer for the entire year as a household member or must be the taxpayer’s parent, grandparent, child, stepchild (by blood or adoption), foster child, sibling, step-sibling, or a descendant of any of these, in-laws, or any other blood relation
  • Gross Income – the person must have made less than $4,200 in 2019 ($4,150 for 2018)
  • Support – taxpayer must have provided more than half of the person’s total support during the year; any income received but not spent is not counted as part of a person’s support.

Also in addition to the above, to qualify for the child tax credit, your child must be under the age of 17 at the end of the 2021 tax season.

OP...You asked about the Child CARE Credit.  This is to pay for someone to watch your child(ren) so that you can work.  Is that what you mean?

@msbarbf Are you really asking about the child tax credit?

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.   The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.
