The Georgia Child and Dependent Care Credit should be computed automatically and added to your Georgia return. As long as you filled out the credit questions for your federal return then the Georgia credit is just 30% of the amount (with a maximum of $315 for one child and $672 for two or more children).
When you come to the end of guided tax preparation and have paid for the return BUT BEFORE YOU HAVE EFILED you will be able to view your forms. For the Georgia Child Dependent Care Credit it will show up on page 3 of the Georgia form 500 on line 19. If you don't see it there then you'll want to delete your Georgia return and start over in order to make sure the information carries over.
Having the same issue as original poster. Dependent Care Credit is captured correctly in Federal return but not in Georgia return. No option to add it to Georgia return (as it should be automatically pulled in). Deleted Georgia return and started over but still no luck x2 and x3. Software issue?
@mm1376 This problem is known and has been reported to the TurboTax Moderators. No known date yet when this will be fixed.
Thanks for the update that this is a known issue being worked on. I spent 4 hours on 4 phone calls to 2 “product experts” and 2 “tax experts.”
The tax experts said it should be there but it’s not. Best she could offer was to manually fill out a paper return instead of TurboTax state e-file?! The other tax expert suggested using a local tax filing service or other software company. I couldn’t believe my ears.
The product expert was pretty new and suggested calling the Georgia Department of Revenue for help on getting TurboTax to add the child and dependent care expense credit?!
I am glad to hear I’m not the only one with the issue and hopefully TurboTax tech support / moderators are able to get the bug fixed in a timely manner.
In the meantime, TurboTax SHOULD notate that Georgia returns are NOT ready for filing yet if you have the child and dependent care expense credit.
I’ve noticed TurboTax usually advises if a form isn’t ready yet and it’s expected ready date. That would be helpful here.
Thanks,
Tom
This reply is specific for RobertB4444 (Employee tax expert). TurboTax is NOT automatically calculating and including the Georgia child and dependent care tax credit. I have ensured the federal child and dependent care tax credit is there. I have tried deleting and restarting the Georgia return to no avail. There is definitely
a software issue that is causing this credit to not be imported automatically and no way to manually add it either.
I'm also having the same issue, but I believe I have been able to narrow down the problem.
Because of the American Rescue Plan passed in 2021, the federal section when filling out your Dependent Care Credit in TurboTax asks, "Did you or your spouse have a principal place of residence in the U.S. for more than half of 2021?" This question is used to determine if the credit is nonrefundable or fully refundable. Prior to 2021 the credit was nonrefundable and from what I have been able to test online, it appears that if I select "no" to the question above regarding ones principal place of residence, the credit transfers properly to the state tax forms. When I again select "Yes" to the question above the credit is removed from the state return.
From what I can tell, it seems that TurboTax has not taken this into account. I have also looked in-depth into the GA-500 state tax forms and instructions and it makes no mention that the credit can only be applied if the federal credit is nonrefundable. In fact the exact wording from IND-CR 202 is "Amount of child & dependent care expense credit claimed on Federal Form 1040."
If someone else would like to try and make the change I mention above it would be interesting to see if you get the same result.
@hrodriguez1776 I made the change you mentioned (selecting No for US place of residence) for the federal credit and then the Georgia credit transfers properly. When I change it back to “Yes” for US place of residence, the Georgia credit disappears. That is definitely incorrect and is a bug.
I hope someone from the Turbo Tax tech team is listening. How do you forward this info to them?
As noted above, this issue has been identified and is being worked on. Please see this Intuit webpage and sign up to be notified when the resolution is available.
As of Feb 2, 2022 this items appears resolved. When I logged into TurboTax the GA Refund reflected the correct refund amount.
Same here, issue seems fixed now. Thanks.
