How do we ensure our W2 job related expenses were applied correctly to our return they appeared to now make a difference.

This year, they won't.  The only reason that TurboTax allows you to enter them is that some states continue to allow these expenses and, if allowed at the state level, these would carry over to your state return.

Unfortunately, job-related expenses for employees are no longer deductible under the new tax law.  Please see the TurboTax FAQ "Can employees deduct any job-related expenses?" below for more information.
