How do i "withdraw" excess money from an hsa

TT is telling me I need to do this, but doesn't provide any details. (My first time using TT and the second thing that isn't working for me. Unimpressed.)

The HSA is your HSA, it is incumbent on you to learn how to withdraw money from the HSA as needed. Note that when you go to the HSA's website, there is likely a form that allows you to withdraw excess contributions. Note that this phrase is important because you don't want the HSA custodian to think that this is a normal distribution.

When the HSA custodian accepts your request, then they will send you a check for the amount of the withdrawal (plus any earnings, if they do that). In addition, they will send you a form 1099-SA sometime between now and January 2027. Why so long? Because this form needs to be entered on your 2026 tax return, which you will do in early 2027.

How do i "withdraw" excess money from an hsa

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, but there's no need to be snide about it.  Yes, it's my HSA, yes, I use it all the time for medical expenses, but I had never heard of taking money out for another reason.  I also had never heard the term "withdraw" used with regard to an HSA.  I don't "withdraw" money to pay bills, I enter reimbursement requests or use my debit card.  At any rate, I will check my HSA administrators website and see what I can do.

Thanks.

How do i "withdraw" excess money from an hsa

I was not being snide. One of the difficulties is that here in the Community, we get posts from all sorts of people, from tax-savvy to the total beginners. I am not sure how else I was to take your heading "How do i "withdraw" excess money from an hsa" other than to mean that you had never done this before.

When you make an excess HSA contribution, then you must make a "withdrawal of excess contributions", or else the HSA administrator will misunderstand you and send you a 1099-SA with the wrong distribution code. We see this happening daily because taxpayers do not understand how an HSA works. Hence my desire to be very explicit and perhaps excessively pedagogical.
