How do I know my property penalty and interest paid for one of the turbo tax boxes?

I don't see this anywhere on my 1098

How do I know my property penalty and interest paid for one of the turbo tax boxes?

@ammee-ingram, we’re not sure to which TurboTax box you’re referring, or what you mean by “property penalty.” If we’re talking about the 1098 form itself (which looks like this) and not one of the 1098-A-to-Z variations, interest should definitely be in box 1 (and if there’s just one 1098, that would be the total for the year).

If the other thing to which you’re referring is property taxes, that sometimes takes some searching, but is often reported informally by the lender (if it’s paid from your escrow account to the county), above or below the actual 1098 form, or maybe even on the back of the page. (We definitely don’t want the amount you paid into escrow for taxes though, as they may not have actually paid it all during the year!)

If they didn’t report it for whatever reason, or you paid the tax yourself (outside of an escrow account), you may have to contact the county. Fortunately, many have a website (like this one, from Kansas) where you can search the property’s address and find out exactly what you paid during 2022 (which is the deductible amount—not what was assessed or due). Doing an internet search for “Real estate tax [your county name]” should work if they’re set up this way.

There are some other boxes of the 1098 (and in the TurboTax “home” interface) which are frequently blank, and you’ll want to skip them unless it specifically asks for a zero. However, if I’ve been barking up the wrong tree, and you weren’t even talking about what I was thinking, please re-post with the specific 1098 and/or issue, and we can make sure you have your answer!
