SuperUser retiree gives some excellent advice.
If you haven't filed your return, or if it's been rejected, you don't have to amend. Just go back into the return and make the changes.
If your return has been accepted, THEN you can amend. Please see the instructions contained in these TurboTax Help articles to amend your return:
You can track your amended taxes with the IRS tracking tool. Your amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up in the IRS system. It takes the IRS around 16 weeks to process your amended taxes.
The processing time for amended state return differs from state to state. Contact your state to find out how long it takes them to process your amended taxes.
Keep in mind, before you go to the trouble of amending, in order to get a benefit from itemizing deductions, the total has to exceed the standard deduction for your filing status:
