How do I get to enter itemized deductions on my return??

You will likely need to amend your return

Filing your taxes is not like tweeting --it does NOT happen in real time and there are no do-overs or take-backs.

The only way you can hope to straighten things out is to WAIT until you actually receive your original refund.

You can make those corrections if your return is rejected.

Perhaps some terminology/definitions would be in order:
AMEND:- your return is what you do AFTER your return has been filed and accepted
by the IRS and/or state.  (No additional charge)

CHANGE:- your return is what you do BEFORE your return has been filed --simply go
back to the respective information and change it as needed.

CORRECT:- your return is what you do AFTER you attempted to file your return and
it is rejected by either IRS, or state --again, simply go back to the
respective information and change it as needed.

Above all  DO NOT DO ANYTHING until you find out if your return is rejected or accepted.

How do I get to enter itemized deductions on my return??

UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019

SuperUser retiree gives some excellent advice.

If you haven't filed your return, or if it's been rejected, you don't have to amend.  Just go back into the return and make the changes.

If your return has been accepted, THEN you can amend.  Please see the instructions contained in these TurboTax Help articles to amend your return:

You can track your amended taxes with the IRS tracking tool. Your amended return will take up to 3 weeks after you mailed it to show up in the IRS system.  It takes the IRS around 16 weeks to process your amended taxes.

The processing time for amended state return differs from state to state. Contact your state to find out how long it takes them to process your amended taxes.

Keep in mind, before you go to the trouble of amending, in order to get a benefit from itemizing deductions, the total has to exceed the standard deduction for your filing status:

  • Single - $12,200
  • Married filing jointly or Qualified Widow - $24,400
  • Head of household - $18,350
