How do I get past Medical Expenses Needs Review?

Turbotax keeps telling me my Medical Expenses needs review.

On the review page, there should be a question and box on the top left for you to fill in. 

Another thought, you might have an HSA that is affecting your medical. That is a completely different area. If you have an HSA, be sure all medical claimed on HSA and covered is not being deducted on sch A also. You can't use nontaxed funds as a deductible expense.

If using: 

• Desktop: switch to Forms Mode and look for the exclamation marks to determine where the error is.
• Online: go back through your medical expenses and look for unanswered questions that coordinate with your deductions. When you get to the review page, scroll up and down looking for a box that is highlighted so you can read the full question.

I have this same problem and I have tried everything--including deleting the form and re-entering the data (again), as was suggested.  This is now beyond frustrating.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: 

In TurboTax Online, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools. 

1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools. 
2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.  
3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent. 
4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number. 

In TurboTax CD/Download versions, go to the black panel on the top of your screen and select Online. 

1. Scroll down to and select Send tax file to Agent. 
2. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click send through this screen and then you will get a Token number. 

Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.   

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

Would the procedure you suggest differ from going through all the steps while on the phone with a Turbo Tax representative who shares my screen?  I've done that; they could not get it to work.  The first person helping me engaged a coworker.  Then a third person called me back, who also consulted another.

I am having the same problem.

This is clearly a software issue.  How do you report a bug to turbotax? When I called customer service, I got a bot who texted me useless information.

Yes, I agree--a software issue.  And DOZENS of customers have posted the same question over the last three weeks.

Same issue for me.  No matter how many boxes I fill in I can not get the Medical Expenses to stop insisting that it "Needs Review".  I confirmed that the final tax return PDF for reviewing shows zero dollars for that section.

Are you taking the standard deduction?   Medical expenses are an itemized deduction.   If you don't have more itemized deductions than your standard deduction, they don't affect your tax return.  Preview your 1040 and look on line 12 to see if the amount is the standard deduction.   If you are taking the standard deduction (not itemizing), you can ignore it; it won't prevent e-filing.  

You can deduct (if you itemize) the amount of your medical expenses over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.   If this amount combined with all of your other itemized deductions is more than your standard deduction, TurboTax will automatically make the switch and add Schedule A to your tax return.   

If you want to change to itemized deduction to see the difference and be able to view your medical expenses, follow the directions in this link.   But remember to change it back if your standard deduction is higher.   For most taxpayers, the standard deduction is the better option.
