If you are filing a joint return you need to show income from both spouses in order to get the childcare credit.   Or is your spouse disabled--or a student?   If not, then without positive income from both of you, you will not get the credit.   If one of you has self-employment income it must show a profit.

If only one spouse had earned income, you will not be able to take the credit. The credit is based on the income of the lowest-earning spouse. That amount would be zero.
