How do I enter charitable donations of food items (eggs, cheese, butter) purchased and donated to a food pantry? Donations made each month.

Follow these steps:

1. Open your return to deductions and credit
2. Select Charitable Donations
3. Select items (non-cash)
4. You can choose your entry method: You can enter monthly, quarterly or one amount for the whole year. I would enter Jan - Dec monthly food supplies and would enter the following (adjust based on your preference):
5. Description - eggs, butter, cheese or whatever you want to put here, maybe pantry items
6. Method - purchase price
7. Date - use the last donation date
8. If the total is over $500 you will also need to list the date you acquired the items, select various.

You will need to keep: 

• all your grocery receipts
• written acknowledgement from the pantry for any month with value of $250 or more
